The girl with a balloon
As the hammer at the auction house went down, the destiny of the painting was determined. However, unlike other paintings in the Sotheby’s auction house, this painting had something different in store! The bid was made and to everyone’s surprise the frame of the painting started shredding it.
The mastermind behind this stunt was none other than Banksy, the creator of the painting himself.
Banksy is an anonymous England-based street artist, vandal, political activist, and film director. He is best known for his stencil graffiti featured on walls, streets and bridges of cities worldwide.
He doesn’t believe in selling photographs or reproductions of his street graffiti, however, art auctioneers have been in pursuit to sell his street art on location and leave the problem of its removal in the hands of the winning bidder. Banksy’s documentary film Exit Through the Gift Shop (2010) made its debut at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival.
In January 2011, he was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Documentary for the film.In 2014, he was awarded Person of the Year at the 2014 Webby Awards.
According to Banksy his inspiration is 3D, a graffiti artist who later became a founding member of the English musical group Massive Attack. His latest stunt of shredding the painting completely failed, however, it may have doubled its price to £2 more!
Girl With Balloon, which was last year voted the UK’s best-loved work of art, first appeared on a wall in Great Eastern Street in Shoreditch, east London. The 2006 gallery version featured spray paint and acrylic on canvas, mounted on a board. After the frame auto shredded the painting, it somehow created another masterpiece which is now called as ‘Love is in the bin.’
